The world is everchanging. It can be a complex and volatile place. Surrounded by ambiguity and uncertainty, it can be hard to navigate what our role is and where we belong in society. Through the Master of Development Management (MDM) program, Vice Principal Yeshi Nidup was able to better understand the world around him and find his place as a development manager ready to take on the challenges facing his country.
International Opportunity
Nidup hails from Bhutan, a country that has been considered a development success story by the World Bank for its progress in alleviating poverty.[i] He had long dreamt of furthering his studies and earning a master’s degree, but his dream only became a reality through support from the Asian Development Bank – Japan Scholarship Program.
Nidup’s yearlong experience as a student at the Asian Institute of Management’s (AIM) Master of Development Management (MDM) program has enhanced his perspectives and approaches to solving complex issues. “The MDM course prepared me with the right skills, aptitude, and knowledge to deal with complex problems in this volatile, uncertain, complex, ambiguous (VUCA) world,” he says. He highlights that the lessons and teachings imparted on him by the program have made him more confident and proactive in dealing with complex problems.
Knowledge is power
Throughout his student journey, Nidup has become more passionate about research. In 2018, he received the Best Capstone Award for his Management Research Report entitled Strengthening science education in middle and higher secondary schools in Bhutan through the use of ICT. Among his other notable research projects, Nidup was given an opportunity to publish a paper entitled Comparative Analysis of Information and Communication Technology in Education in Five Asian Countries. Nidup believes that through research, he can help solve the problems present within a community as well as contribute to generating larger knowledge that can inform solutions. Since the completion of his studies at AIM, Nidup has continued to immerse himself in research concerning topics such as education and information communication technology. He has now published six works in various journals and platforms.
Nidup has great appreciation for what he has gained while studying at AIM. “With MDM, I am confident that I can make a difference in the community. It has empowered me beyond my expectations.” He proudly states that he is a development manager who is ready to sacrifice and take on responsibilities in order to make his community, his country, and the world a better place.
